Why Go Organic
The human skin wraps and protects our bodies. It constitutes a living dynamic tissue system. Our skin has the remarkable ability to absorb applied products into the bloodstream. In fact 60% of the products we use on our skin are absorbed and deposited into the circulatory system. The average person absorbs up to 30 pounds of ingredients contained in cosmetic, hair products, and skin care products in sixty years time.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit watch dog group, who scrutinize ingredients for their safety:
-
33% of personal care products have been linked to cancer
-
45% are reported to be potentially harmful to our reproductive systems and/or fetal development
-
60% have ingredients that can act like estrogens or disrupt hormones
It is a fact – we are what we eat, breathe or put on our skin.
Chemicals such as phthalates, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate, propylene glycol, and parabens, are all commonly used in cosmetics and body care products, and are known carcinogens or toxins that affect the immune, reproductive, and endocrine systems.
Breast Cancer.org cites Parabens (preservatives) in cosmetics as hormone disruptors and says that these chemicals, “can affect how estrogen and other hormones act in the body, by blocking them or mimicking them, which throws off the body’s hormonal balance. Because estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer develop and grow, many women choose to limit their exposure to these chemicals that can act like estrogen.”
According to The Breast Cancer Fund, “In the U.S., major loopholes in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products, even if those chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility or birth defects. At the same time as untested chemicals have been steadily introduced into our environment, breast cancer incidence has risen dramatically.”
The David Suzuki Foundation states that U.S. researchers have identified 12 harmful chemicals used personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Many products include plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks).
You can avoid harmful chemicals by downloading here the Foundation’s Shoppers Guide and using it to audit your cosmetics and bathroom products.

Reasons to Use Organic/Non-Toxic Products?
The average adult is exposed to 168 hazardous chemicals each day. Chemicals such as phthalates, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate, propylene glycol, and parabens, are all commonly used in cosmetics and body care products, and are known carcinogens or toxins that affect the immune, reproductive, and endocrine systems.
Your skin absorbs things easily. Anything that is applied to the skin – such as moisturizers, lipsticks, deodorants, and other cosmetics are absorbed into the body and into the blood stream just as if you’d eaten it.
Infertility is rising in women under the age of 25. A major study found that pregnant women and women of child-bearing age are at greater risk for infertility and reproductive problems as result of exposure to certain common chemical ingredients.
Cancer, chronic illness, and birth defect rates are really high and growing. Numerous studies have shown links to the huge number of toxins that we’re exposed to on a daily basis from cosmetic and personal care products.
Most chemicals have not undergone any safety testing. Of the more than 10,000 chemical ingredients in cosmetic and personal care products less then 10% have actually been tested. And of those that have been tested virtually none have been banned. The FDA has only restricted 9 ingredients in 67 years.
Unborn babies have been found to carry hundreads of chemicals. Laboratory tests have detected as many as 232 chemicals in newborns which were tested through an umbilical cord blood study. This report has produced hard evidence that children are being exposed, beginning in the womb, to complex mixtures of dangerous substances that may have lifelong consequences.
Low doses matter. Exposure to chemicals is cumilative and “adds up” over time exponentially with exposures to other toxics in food we eat, water we drink, and the air we breathe.
Organic products just work better. Non toxic skin care products are more effective simply because they are made with ingredients that don’t disrupt your body’s natural state. Since what you put on your skin will end up in your body, treat your body well and you will feel and look your best.
